Active Directory to Microsoft Entra ID: Hybrid and Cloud Identity

Before email, files or servers move to the Microsoft cloud, users need one secure identity that works on-premises and in the cloud. RHC designs and implements hybrid identity with Microsoft Entra ID, and helps you move toward cloud-only identity at your own pace.

The challenges

  • Duplicate accounts, old OUs, disabled users and invalid UPNs block synchronization.
  • You have to pick a sync tool (Entra Connect Sync or Entra Cloud Sync) and an authentication method (password hash sync, pass-through authentication or federation).
  • AD FS servers add cost and risk, and many companies want to retire them safely.
  • Many directories still have no MFA, allow legacy authentication and leave privileged accounts unprotected.
  • Apps that still depend on on-premises authentication need a path to single sign-on.

How we do it

  1. 1Directory assessment: health of Active Directory, UPN suffixes, duplicates, attributes and stale objects.
  2. 2Cleanup and remediation: fix what would break synchronization, before any change in the cloud.
  3. 3Identity design: sync tool, authentication method, OU filtering and device join strategy.
  4. 4Implementation: Entra Connect or Cloud Sync, password hash sync and seamless single sign-on.
  5. 5Security baseline: MFA, Conditional Access, block legacy authentication and protect admin accounts.
  6. 6AD FS retirement (when present): move federated domains to cloud authentication with a rollback plan.
  7. 7Apps and devices: single sign-on for SaaS apps and Entra hybrid join or Entra join for devices.
